Matthew CullTransgender RealismAbstract
Things are not looking good. The lives and wellbeing of transgender people around the world are under threat. Everywhere it seems that political battles are ending in losses for trans people. In the UK trans people have become the legal and political football du jour, and seemingly every day sees a new hit piece about trans people in this or that media outlet. All the while, our healthcare has ground to a halt, our rates of homelessness are sky-high, we are precariously employed (if employed at all) and rates of hate-crimes against us are through the roof. What is going on here? Why is this happening to a minority who, at best, make up only 1-2% of the population? This crisis in trans politics has generally been analysed as a moral panic: a media-driven whipping up of anti-trans sentiment (see Barker 2017). However, I want to suggest that this is not the whole story. Rather, we should see the media as playing as just one part in a broader class conflict. That is, a conflict between a broadly working class or precarious population, trans people, and a broadly bourgeois reactionary movement over what sorts of gendered life are acceptable in society, and importantly, whether one is given the material resources to thrive in that gendered life. Here I will draw on the theoretical resources developed by the late Christopher Chitty, suggesting that his framework of queer realism and sexual hegemony can be used to understand contemporary trans politics in the UK. The battle over gender hegemony, I suggest, is one that the transgender realist is well-placed to understand. |
